About

Jim Whitlock, Artist

Hello and welcome to my home on the web.

Growing up in the 1940’s and 50’s I realized my fascination for Aviation. My mother and father bought their first home in East Point, Georgia, situated at the northwest end of the Atlanta municipal airport runway!

This runway was used until the 1970s. Turning the clock back to the early 50’s, there was plenty of radial engine noise coming from the nearby old “Candler Field” as my Father always called it. I remember riding on Fathers shoulders and watching the old planes flying over our neighborhood. I think it was then when I started drawing what I was seeing in the warm summer skies. My toybox in my bedroom had a great surface on the lid underside for aircraft drawings, which I drew a good many renderings of, everything from DC-3’s to the Constellations! Dad would take us to the airport after church on Sundays and we could stand at a chain-link fence and watch the Eastern, Delta, Southern and many other airlines taxiing in and out and taking off to far away destinations.

After high school I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent my four years aboard the USS Duluth LPD-6. We carried marines and helicopters and I always loved the air ops! The ships commanders always used me for my artistic abilities so I was busy at times doing anything they needed.

After the Navy I got my wish to work at the airport! Eastern Airlines hired me to be a ramp serviceman, and I got a good dose of aviation for twenty years from 1969 to 1989! I met my wife, JoCarole, in 1970 and she was my greatest influence to keep pursuing art and developing my ability. I did many originals and prints of Eastern Airlines aircraft as well as anything else that anyone requested.

Today, in this new high-tech digital world of the 21st century, I continue painting from my home in Tyrone, Georgia, USA, using traditional painting methods. Most of my work is done in acrylic or watercolor, and I occasionally also do pencil sketches.

Much of my artwork is based on treasured photographs provided by clients who send digital images of their photographs to me by email. From these images, I create a completely custom piece of art for the customer, and then ship them the original art. These original pieces of art are then enjoyed by clients, friends and family across the country and around the world.

I also currently have a small selection of limited edition prints for sale in my online store on this website:

  • Eastern Air Lines ~ “Captain Eddie”
  • Eastern Air Lines ~ “Hat in the Ring”
  • Eastern Air Lines ~ “Remember the Connie” over NYC, circa 1950’s.
  • “Connie in Summer Skies”
